So I feel like I've been a little slow getting this started, and I apologize, but what can I say, it's the holiday season and I've been busy like everyone else. So here goes for now.
So I was like every other little girl out there who's ever wanted a horse. I begged. I went for a yearly fathers day trail ride with my dad - which he obviously had to pay for - he should have seen the problem back then! And then about a month before my 10th birthday, everything changed. I was begging (as usual) when we were out at dinner one night. My mom mentioned that if they ever got a pony at the Animal Rescue League that needed a home, we might consider it. Little did she know, there was an ARL officer at the table behind us...who piped up and mentioned that they had just gotten in a pony on an abuse case about a week earlier.
We didn't take Blackie home at first, and good thing...I didn't really know how to ride, and we knew nothing about horses. We boarded him for a few months and Moby Dick Farm in Brewster with Nick Rodday (whom I could go on and on with stories about), while I took lessons and my dad began adding stalls to the side of his workshop. Nick gave my dad Sandy, one of his old field hunters from his original farm in Concord, as a companion for Blackie. Thus became "Black Sand Stable".
Blackie was an awful pony. He dragged me, charged at me, scraped me off under fencerails and branches. I remember one trail ride he was so bad that my dad threw me up on Sandy and he rode Blackie home. But ultimately, he taught me...and if nothing else he taught me stick like glue and to be more stubborn than him. I quickly outgrew him and moved upward and onward to others...whom I'll get to next...
(Sadly I don't have any pics scanned of Blackie but I'll work on tracking some down...)
